Keeping it Old-School
After a couple of builds that came out sounding and looking rather similar, I felt it was time to offer something a little different. I’d always wanted to build a custom keyboard that would mimic the keyboards of old with white and grey key-caps, but felt the interest in these was rather limited. The solution was offering a retro-looking keyboard with some color in a package that would not only sound great but also offer wireless capabilities.
So, in addition to the modifications applied to my previous build – clicky-switches were lubed and modified into becoming silent, the stabilizers were modified and re-lubed and the case’s sound-signature was modified to improve how the keyboard sounds – dye sublimated PBT key-caps were installed with a MDA profile. For those not familiar with MDA, it’s a profile heavily based on the SA profile (think old IBM keyboards) but with a key-height closer to that of the OEM profile.
With these keycaps – due to their shape -, key-presses sounded ever-so-slightly louder producing a deeper sound than with the OEM keycaps on my previous keyboards of similar configuration, but they produced an incomparable tactile experience.
